Kepulauan Nusantara adalah salah satu kawasan yang paling kaya dan paling kompleks dalam sejarah peradaban manusia. Di sinilah bertemunya angin-angin muson dari Samudra Hindia dengan arus-arus Laut Tiongkok Selatan, di sinilah bertumpuknya kekayaan alam yang tidak tertandingi dari rempah-rempah Maluku hingga emas Sumatera dan berlian Kalimantan, dan di sinilah bertemunya manusia-manusia dari ratusan bangsa dan peradaban yang datang berdagang, belajar, menetap, dan pada akhirnya meninggalkan warisan peradaban yang sangat dalam bekasnya. Dalam konteks yang sangat kaya ini, Islam hadir bukan sebagai penakluk yang datang membawa pedang, melainkan sebagai cahaya yang datang bersama kapal-kapal dagang yang berlayar dengan layar penuh oleh angin kepercayaan dan semangat persaudaraan.
Buku yang ada di hadapan pembaca ini lahir dari sebuah keyakinan yang sangat sederhana namun sangat dalam: bahwa untuk memahami Indonesia masa kini, kita harus memahami Nusantara masa silam. Dan untuk memahami ekonomi Indonesia yang masih terus berjuang menemukan modelnya yang autentik, kita harus memahami peradaban ekonomi yang pernah dibangun oleh kerajaan-kerajaan Islam yang berdiri megah di kepulauan ini selama lebih dari enam abad. Buku ini adalah upaya untuk menghadirkan pemahaman itu, dengan segala keterbatasan yang ada, dalam satu narasi yang diharapkan dapat terbaca oleh siapapun yang peduli terhadap sejarah dan masa depan bangsanya.
Selama berabad-abad, Nusantara adalah jantung dari sistem perdagangan global yang menghubungkan peradaban-peradaban terbesar di muka bumi. Ketika Marco Polo berlayar melewati selat-selat kepulauan ini pada abad ke-13, ketika armada-armada raksasa Zheng He memenuhi pelabuhan-pelabuhan Nusantara dengan hadiah-hadiah kaisar pada abad ke-15, ketika kapal-kapal dagang dari Gujarat dan Hadhramaut berlabuh di Pasai dan Malaka sambil membawa serta cahaya Islam bersama komoditas-komoditas mereka, kepulauan ini bukanlah kawasan yang menunggu untuk ditemukan oleh dunia luar. Ia adalah kawasan yang telah lama mengenal dunia dan dikenal oleh dunia, kawasan yang para penguasa dan pedagangnya berbicara dalam bahasa-bahasa dari puluhan bangsa, yang uang-uangnya beredar dari istana-istana Arab hingga pasar-pasar Tiongkok, dan yang rempah-rempahnya mengubah cita rasa masakan dari dapur-dapur Eropa hingga meja-meja makan Timur Tengah.
Karya ini mengeksplorasi peradaban ekonomi yang luar biasa kaya ini melalui berbagai lapisan kajian. Mulai dari landasan teologis yang membentuk cara pandang masyarakat Muslim Nusantara terhadap harta, kerja, dan kewajiban sosial mereka, dilanjutkan dengan analisis mendalam terhadap setiap kerajaan besar yang pernah berdiri dari Samudera Pasai di ujung barat Sumatera hingga kesultanan-kesultanan Maluku di ujung timur. Kerajaan-kerajaan ini bukan sekadar entitas politis yang datang dan pergi dalam pusaran sejarah — mereka adalah laboratorium-laboratorium peradaban yang mengembangkan institusi-institusi ekonomi yang sangat inovatif, sistem-sistem perdagangan yang sangat canggih, dan tradisi-tradisi kesejahteraan sosial yang jauh mendahului zamannya.
Dari Malaka yang di puncak kemakmurannya menjadi kota tempat lebih dari delapan puluh bangsa bertemu dalam satu pasar terbuka, hingga Makassar yang dengan lantang memproklamirkan kebebasan berlayar di laut sebagai hak semua manusia. Dari sistem wakaf yang mengubah tanah pertanian pribadi menjadi infrastruktur sosial yang abadi, hingga jaringan pesantren yang menghubungkan ribuan komunitas Muslim dalam satu ekosistem kepercayaan dan pembelajaran. Dari pedagang-pedagang Bugis yang membentangkan jangkauan perahu mereka dari Sulawesi hingga pantai utara Australia, hingga sultanah-sultanah Aceh yang memerintah kerajaan dengan kecakapan diplomatik yang membuat takjub para duta dari London dan Istanbul. Semua ini adalah wajah-wajah dari satu peradaban yang sama: peradaban ekonomi Islam Nusantara.
Tentu saja, peradaban ini bukan tanpa bayangan. Buku ini tidak menghindar dari mengakui ketimpangan sosial yang sering mewarnai kehidupan ekonomi kerajaan-kerajaan ini, sistem corvée yang membebankan petani, monopoli yang tidak selalu adil terhadap produsen-produsen kecil, dan berbagai paradoks lainnya antara ideal Islam dan realitas kekuasaan manusiawi. Namun, bahkan dengan segala kekurangannya, peradaban ini mengandung kekayaan intelektual dan moral yang sangat besar yang layak untuk dipelajari, dihargai, dan dihidupkan kembali dalam konteks Indonesia abad ke-21.
Kolonialisme Eropa yang datang dengan meriam dan perjanjian-perjanjian tidak setara menghancurkan banyak aspek dari peradaban ekonomi ini secara sangat sistematis dan sangat brutal. Sistem perdagangan bebas yang telah berlangsung berabad-abad dihancurkan oleh monopoli VOC. Institusi-institusi ekonomi Islam yang telah melayani masyarakat selama generasi-generasi terdisrupsi oleh regulasi-regulasi colonial. Dan yang paling menyakitkan, kepercayaan diri sebuah peradaban untuk menentukan nasib ekonominya sendiri dirampas dengan sangat efektif oleh sistem eksploitasi yang meninggalkan luka yang belum sepenuhnya sembuh hingga saat ini. Namun, seperti akar pohon yang tidak bisa dihancurkan hanya dengan menebang batangnya, warisan peradaban ekonomi Islam Nusantara tidak bisa dihapus begitu saja. Ia terus hidup dalam tradisi-tradisi pesantren, dalam etos niaga masyarakat-masyarakat Muslim di seluruh kepulauan, dalam perkembangan ekonomi syariah yang sangat pesat dalam beberapa dekade terakhir, dan dalam kerinduan mendalam masyarakat Indonesia untuk memiliki sistem ekonomi yang tidak hanya efisien tetapi juga adil dan bermartabat.
Buku ini dipersembahkan kepada semua orang yang percaya bahwa sejarah bukan hanya beban masa lalu tetapi juga kompas yang menunjukkan arah masa depan. Bahwa kejayaan yang pernah ada adalah bukti dari kejayaan yang bisa ada lagi. Dan bahwa memahami dari mana kita berasal adalah langkah pertama yang tidak bisa dilewati dalam perjalanan menuju ke mana kita ingin pergi.
